February 22nd - 26th

Language Arts:

We continued to practice our procedural writing and adding descriptive words to our daily writing. We read Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. We answered many comprehension questions about the book and discussed “What is a friend and an enemy?” We focused on the story elements of characters, setting, problem and solution, and retelling the many events of the story. We decided that we would like to have just friends, so we created a friendship pie and wrote some ideas of how to be a good friend. Our word family this week was “et”. It was great to wear our pink shirts in honour of being a friend and anti-bullying!

Math:

We used our knowledge of doubles facts to help solve subtraction equations. We worked on solving open-ended subtraction word problems. We continued to do Math Centers with Mrs. Hull that focus on subtraction, doubles facts, cube conversations, sorting and patterning. We also continued with some 100th Day activities of making a 100, name patterned quilt, identifying patterns on the 100 chart, writing about what we would do if we had $100 and what we would look like if we were 100 years old.

Science:

We mixed some primary colours this week to get new secondary colours. As all scientists log their observations and findings, we used our knowledge of procedural writing to do the write up of our Science Experiment of mixing blue and yellow together.

Upcoming Events:

Monday: Wear your formal uniforms. We are filming for our assembly, so please have all pieces of our formal uniform, especially cardigans, a dress shirt and no coloured socks.

Wednesday: Please bring your library books

Friday: Please return your homework folders and be ready for your spelling test.

February 16th-19th

Students were excited to celebrate the 100th day of school. We read several books and counted to 100 in many ways, wrote a 100 poem, created special artwork with the number 100, made glasses, a bookmark, and a cheerio number line, as necklaces are not allowed any more due to safety issues. We will be exploring with our 100 chart to find patterns, odd and even numbers, two-digit numbers, etc. in the upcoming week, as we ran out of time.

Students continue to practice the song, I am Yoga, and our self-control poem for the March assembly. Thank you for helping them practice these at home.

We used the tens partner strategy to solve subtraction equations this week and worked on more open-ended subtraction word problems. We also started some new Math centers with Mrs. Hull. As a challenge, students were able to write their own word problem for classmates to solve.

Students read a story, Postcards from Barnaby, and learned about some special landmarks in Alberta.

Upcoming Events:

Monday: Wear your formal uniform

Wednesday: Return your library book

Pink Shirt Day/Uniform if no pink

Friday: Return your homework

Bring a blue shirt in a bag labelled with your name.

February 8th-10th

It has been a short, but busy week. We got to celebrate several holidays this week: Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year. We read many stories throughout the week. We decorated bags to help organize our valentine cards. We made a dragon puppet and bookmarks. Our word work was based on making as many words as we could from the word, “valentines”. We also did a review of some of the word families that we have done this year.

We focused on the “count up” strategy for subtraction. You can count up to find the difference when the numbers are close together. For example, 11-9=2 count up two from 9 to 11.

Next week, we will be practicing for our upcoming assembly in March. We will be focusing on self-control and being a good friend. Also, Thursday will be our 100th day of school and we will be focusing on many Math activities for that day. WE WILL NOT DRESS UP THAT DAY, AS IT IS A SPECIAL KINDERGARTEN ACTIVITY. We are limited with some of the activities that we normally do, but I’m sure that it will be a great day!

Please practice reading the following poem with your child. (Click on link or see blog below.) We will be reading this at our virtual assembly in February. Also, we all need a blue t-shirt to wear for a special activity during the assembly. I will post a due date once all the grade one teachers are ready. It may need to stay at the school for a few days. If you wish, you can start bringing them in now and I can put them aside for the day they are needed. Please have the t-shirts in a bag with your child’s name. We will be putting them over our uniform shirts. Thank you for your support with the assembly activities.

Have an awesome long weekend!

February 1-5

It was a busy week in room 11. We welcomed two new students this week. Everyone was excited to have them back in the building.

Language Arts/Art: We created Valentine’s Day cards for Meals on Wheels. Students created a patterned heart for the cover of the card, and wrote a poem and message inside to help cheer the person receiving the meals on Valentine’s Day. This is one of the outreach activities that our school does in the community each year.

Math: We worked on the “counting back” strategy for subtraction this week. We can use this strategy when subtracting small numbers, such as 1, 2, or 3. For example, 11-2=9 We start at 11 and count back two.

Social Studies: Students created a Map of “Outside My Window”

Science: We got to predict along with the groundhog whether it will be an early Spring or six more weeks of Winter.  We did a drawing of the groundhog and wrote our predictions. Your child should have bought home a small book explaining Groundhog Day and the prediction.

Upcoming Events:

On Wednesday, we will hand out our Valentine’s Day cards to everyone. They will be in a bag and you can decide when your child can go through them. There will not be any treats sent in to share with classmates this year. You can send a special treat for your child to personally enjoy that day if you wish. We will be doing some Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year activities in the afternoon as well.
