January 25-28

LA: We continued with Procedural Writing this week and practiced the “ug” word family. We also read, “Hey Little Ant” and learned about empathy and other points of view. We had to decide whether we would squish or save the ant.

Math: We started subtraction this week and practiced the “minus zero” and “a number minus itself” strategies. We also practiced adding 10 and had another round of Math centers.

Social Studies: We made a map of our new classroom setup. Students had to choose their own key or legends for the items in our class.

We will be receiving two new students in our class on Monday and we are super excited to meet them. We have also been discussing how we can be a good friend and include others this week.

In the blog below, you will find the class list if you choose to do valentines for everyone. All valentines need to be in the class by Friday, February 5th and everyone on our list needs to be included. Unfortunately, food or toy treats cannot accompany the valentines. Please check Mrs. Taylor’s email for more details.

January 18th-22nd

Math: We started the addition strategy of adding ten to a number. (When 10 is added to a number, the tens-place digit increases by 1.) We have been using our “100 chart” to aid in solving these equations. We are also reviewing place value concepts each day during calendar activities. We have started subtraction in some closed word problems.

Language Arts: We started procedural writing where we use transition words of first, next, then, and last. We will add more transitional words as we practice over the next few weeks. We watched a video of how to make an ice cream sundae and then wrote the steps. Students need to think about who their audience is and make sure that they can follow the instructions given.

Raz-Kids should be working fine again. Please let me know if you have any issues. As student skills improve, I may change the level that they are reading at on Raz-Kids. Please let me know if your child gets frustrated with the new level, and we can make further changes.

Social Studies: We started learning about mapping skills.

Science: We are reading stories and poems about colour and winter for the new units.

January 11th-15th

It was so good to see the students in person this week. They did an awesome job of wearing their mask for longer periods of time than usual and adjusting to school routines.

Math: We worked on tens partner strategy this week, as well as, open ended addition word problems. We also started Math centers that focus on concepts such as doubles partners, subitizing, tens partners, counting, making tower patterns and subtraction word problem.

Language Arts: We continue to practice writing sentences on specific topics. We are now also focusing on adding descriptive words to increase our sentences. Another focus is on editing practice of how to use capital letters and punctuation marks.

Science: We started our unit on colour and reading books about Winter seasonal changes. We created “snowman looking up” after reading Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

Social Studies: Students shared their family traditions and celebrations with the class.
