Wow, it’s hard to believe that it is October already and we are starting the second month of the school year! It has been another busy week in room 11.
Students heard many stories about First Nations and
Residential Schools this week. Many students dressed in orange and pledged to
learn more about the past of Indigenous people. We practiced our character
trait of empathy to try and think about what the children went through to be
plucked from their families and placed in communities away from home. They could
not practice their culture or speak their own language. If they did they were
punished in many ways. We decided that it is very important for everyone to have
the freedom to speak their own language and to practice their special celebrations
and cultural events.
The students enjoyed going outside to sketch a fall
tree in our new visual journals. We are learning about Seasonal Changes in
Science and sketching skills in Art.
In Social Studies we used symbols to tell others about
ourselves with a T-Shirt Glyph. Students told us their age, favourite colour,
season and the number of people in their families. This is sort of like a map.
This week, we will find someone who has some things that are the same and
different from us.
