May 24th-27th

Students enjoyed our field trip to Ralph Klein Park. They learned about the Wetlands and enjoyed our outside pond exploration. We found so many small organisms.

We continued to solve open ended subtraction word problems and learn about symmetry in Math.

Most students got to bring home their bean plant this week. A few were kept at the school as they had not started yet. We have been learning about what plants need to successful grow. We will start some animal research in the upcoming week.

We continued to learn about the past and were able to start sharing our family interviews. As a conclusion to our Past/Present Unit, we will be having a Pioneer Day on June 21st. Students will have the opportunity to dress as Pioneers that day and will get to experience a one-room schoolhouse, learn about some olden day toys and make a buzz saw toy, experience some outdoor and indoor games from the past, make a paper doll, and biscuits and butter. Please see below what clothing from the past may look like so that you can plan an outfit for that day.

These are some typical outfits to give you some ideas:

Boys

·       Shirts were worn loose.  Plain colors were common, but stripes or plaids were also used.  Wear shirts with long or short sleeves and a collar.

·       Trousers (pants) were also worn loose.  Heavy cotton, corduroy and canvas pants or overalls are good choices.  Colors included blue, black, gray, browns, especially beige and tan.

·       Open front vest

·       Suspenders: Pants were held up by suspenders that were buttoned on the outside of the waistband and crossed in the back.

·       Hats:  Everyday hats ranged from pilot caps, straw hats, or wide brimmed low felt hats.

Girls

·       Dress or Skirt

·       Young girls wore simple cotton dresses or skirts to about mid-calf or to just above the ankle. Dresses and blouses had sleeves.

·       White or coloured cotton apron

·       Shawl

·       sunbonnet

·       Hairstyles: A center part is very common.  Chin to shoulder length bobs or long hair worn in three-strand braids were both typical girls’ styles.

Please do not be concerned about creating a totally authentic pioneer costume.  Students may dress up as much as you can manage.  Have fun!!!

Also, students may bring their lunches in pails just like the pioneer children.

Upcoming Events:
