October 4th-7th

I hope that you get to spend some quality time together this long weekend. I always take this time of year to think of all the things that I am thankful for, especially with the past months and our “Covid-19” situation. I am so grateful for my wonderful students and for the support that you give your child in his/her learning and growing. Thanks for supplying your child with masks and sending them to school dressed for the weather.

 

Please read the homework document carefully this week as some things have changed/are changing. Additionally, I have noticed that some of my students are turning in incomplete homework. A lot of students were missing the pattern work in their notebooks this past week. Please check that all tasks are done before sending them in for me to check. I check homework for completion every week and if I notice that something is missing, I will write you a note. Thank you for working so hard with your children at home! It is so appreciated.

The past several weeks, we did some formal assessments in all subject areas. If there are any areas of concerns, I will contact you over the next week. If you do not hear from me, your child is doing well with tasks completed so far this year. I will be sending home some sight word list over the next week or so for you to practice with your child.

We have started Guided Reading Groups. My students are currently working on the strategies "Eagle Eye" (look at the picture and think, "What is in the picture that begins with the first letter") and "Lips the Fish" (say the beginning sound) to help decode words. 

We learned about subitizing this past week and got the chance to practice subitizing numbers on a dice. We will continue with dot cards, ten frames, and larger numbers. We have continued with representing numbers in many ways and will start word problems in the upcoming week.

September 27th - October 1st

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it is October already and we are starting the second month of the school year! It has been another busy week in room 11.

Students heard many stories about First Nations and Residential Schools this week. Many students dressed in orange and pledged to learn more about the past of Indigenous people. We practiced our character trait of empathy to try and think about what the children went through to be plucked from their families and placed in communities away from home. They could not practice their culture or speak their own language. If they did they were punished in many ways. We decided that it is very important for everyone to have the freedom to speak their own language and to practice their special celebrations and cultural events.

The students enjoyed going outside to sketch a fall tree in our new visual journals. We are learning about Seasonal Changes in Science and sketching skills in Art.

In Social Studies we used symbols to tell others about ourselves with a T-Shirt Glyph. Students told us their age, favourite colour, season and the number of people in their families. This is sort of like a map. This week, we will find someone who has some things that are the same and different from us.

September 20th-24th

We read some “Fall” books to start the Seasons Unit in Science. While outside for Physical Education we noticed the fall changes on the field and Mrs. Ghertsos took us on a Leaf Hunt.

 

In Math, we continued extending AB, ABC, and ABCD patterns.

We are also learning how to print numbers correctly. I noticed that most of my students are printing their numbers incorrectly/backwards, even with the number printing homework being done last week. I am reminding students to use tools in the class to help prevent these reversals (number lines, hundred chart, name plates, etc.). Please do the same at home when doing the homework. 

 

I have sent home a poem, entitled, “Alphabet Jive”. Please keep this at home and practice when you have some time. This will aid in student’s letter/sound recognition and daily writing at school. I am encouraging students to write all the sounds that they hear in each word that they want to use in their writing. It is also very important for students to use both lines when printing letters and to have all letters sit on the X line. Some students are having trouble staying on the lines and creating spaces between their words. When completing homework printing pages and sentence writing, please remind students of expectations. This will then become more automatic at school.

September 10th-17th

Some key learning this week:

• We continue to work on classroom routines and expected behaviours of a Le Roi Daniels student.
• In Math this week, we continued to represent number in many ways and started our patterns unit. 
• During Language Arts activities, we continue to practice writing pattern sentences with a sentence frame and worked on the "at" word family and spelling activities. We have been writing "I like" and "I can" statements and My Weekend. We have also been working on printing letters neatly, finger spacing between our words and skipping lines, using the dot, dot, x, skip method. 

Reminders:

• ·      Monday is formal uniform day. Students should wear solid navy or black socks with all other formal pieces.
• ·      Thursday is FUN LUNCH. Please go to www.healthyhunger.ca to place your order. All orders for Thursday, September 23rd, must be in before midnight on Saturday, September 18th.
• ·      Thursday is also our Terry Fox Run. This is NOT a casual day. We will be going out to run/walk, rain or shine so please dress your child appropriately. If you are able to donate, we are collecting Toonies for Terry in support of cancer research. Please send a toonie with your child to school next week.
• ·      Homework books came home on Friday. A new homework assignment will be posted on Sunday.
• ·      We are thrilled and excited that our school has been adopted by Chapters Chinook! From September 13th to October 3rd, this store is going to fundraise on our behalf through donations done directly at the Chapters Chinook location. We’re also going to be raising funds to support our library through the direct fundraising page. Please spread the word by sharing this link with family and friends. September 6th-10th

In Language Arts, we have been practicing writing basic sentences and printing neatly on the line with correct spacing. We did many activities around our names this week. We read a poem and counted the number of letters in our names. We then discovered who else in the class had the same number of letters. We also drew pictures of things that start with the first letter of our name and learned how to fill in the ten frame with the correct number of squares.

In Math, we have been practicing how to print our numbers neatly and learning how to represent numbers in many ways, such as pictures, the written word, tally marks, dice with dots, number line and ten frames. We will add other ways as we progress through the year.

We created patterned hearts artwork for sharing the love of reading and the Chapters/Indigo fundraiser.

Welcome to Grade One!

It has been a busy week getting used to routines and procedures for Grade One.

Upcoming Events and Reminders:

• ·       Please pack your child with a small snack that can be finished quickly AND is separate from the lunch kit.
• ·       Please ensure that your child can open and close all snack/lunch containers themselves, including their water bottle.
• ·       Please have your child practice getting dressed and packing their own backpacks every day. Grade One students should be able to put on their outdoor gear and pack up their backpacks with their lunches and water bottles on their own. 
• ·       Our "Meet the Teacher" Google Meet will be occurring this Thursday, September 9^th at 6:30. Before this date, please try to log on using your child's unique email address and password that was given to you in the information package at the Ice cream Social. 
• ·       Please send your child with an extra mask in their backpack just in case theirs gets dirty/lost. 
• ·       Shoes: You have TWO options: 

Option One: your child should have a pair of black dress shoes (indoors #1), a pair of gym shoes (indoors #2), and a pair of outdoor shoes/boots. 

Option Two: your child should have a pair of athletic completely black shoes (that can be used in class AND gym) and a pair of outdoor shoes/boots. 

If you have not sent your child with shoes fulfilling either of these options, please do so by Wednesday. Velcro is best if your child does not know how to tie their shoes as I will not be tying shoelaces. 😉

• ·       Homework will begin on Monday, September 13th. Look for the blue folder with homework book inside. 
• ·       Make sure all of your child's personal items are labelled, especially uniform pieces, with permanent ink or stickers.

Wow, it’s hard to believe that the school year has come to an end. I would like to thank you for entrusting your child to me and supporting us both throughout the year. I have enjoyed watching each student grow and learn much this past year. I was so sad to see them go home yesterday. I am already looking forward to seeing them throughout the school next year.

Thanks for all the lovely gifts that you sent in for me this past week. It was absolutely unnecessary, but much appreciated.

I just wanted you to know that you have access to Raz-Kids and Mathletics over the summer months. Please continue to read as much as possible throughout the summer months. There is also a special project to encourage reading by the Public Library. Drop by your nearest location and choose books of interest for you and your child to read together.

This past week, we finished our Animal Research and shared some of our learned knowledge with our peers. It’s amazing how much we learned and how well students did with answering questions posed by their peers. In Math, we completed our measurement unit and looked at some artifacts from the past in Social Studies. We also got to say “goodbye” with everyone virtually yesterday.

Report cards can be seen on your Power School account starting today, June 26^th. Please see Mrs. Taylor’s email regarding details.

I hope that you all have an awesome summer having lots of fun as a family. I know that I am looking forward to some extra sleep, road trips, reading and visits to Calaway Park with my nephews and nieces, that I haven’t seen in over a year. Stay safe and healthy as we enter into the next phase of battling “COVID”.

 

We have had a busy week trying to finish up some projects before the end of the year. Students have been enjoying researching a Canadian animal with a partner. We have been writing about our animal’s appearance, habitat and diet over the past two weeks. We will continue this week with predators or enemies, young and interesting facts.

 

On Friday, students brought home their black uniform shoes and some of their work from the year. Please unload your child’s backpack, as more will be coming home again this week. We still have our gym shoes at the school. These will come home on Friday.

If your child will not be in school on Friday, please let me know, so that I can send things earlier in the week.
Also, if you do not plan on being here at the beginning of the year, please talk to Mrs. Taylor so that you do not lose your spot. If you do not plan on returning at all, please also notify Mrs. Taylor so that we can plan for next year.

I would like to wish all dads a Happy Father's Day! I hope that your family treats you well today.

Used Uniform Sale: Fall

If your child has outgrown any of the uniform pieces and you would like to donate them to the school for the used uniform sale in the fall, please clean them and send them in with your child.

It was a fun week in room 11 as we travelled back in time to experience life as a pioneer. We had to adjust Pioneer Day this year due to COVID, so there were some activities that we could not do, such as make biscuits and butter, and some outdoor games due to closeness to others. You may want to try some biscuits and butter making at home this week or over the summer. We learned how things have changed over time. We got to see/use some olden day toys and games, pretend we were in a pioneer school and make paper dolls that represented how children grew back in the olden days. We also learned about entertainment, transportation, cooking, communication, and houses of that time frame. Comments by many students were that it was hard being a pioneer and of course it was tough to believe that they did not have electronics.

We also had Sports Day and intramurals on Friday. Students enjoyed all the activities that Mrs. Ghertsos planned for us. I enjoyed having fun playing games with the students as well. Thanks to School Council for donating “Freezies” for our special snack.

There is no official homework for the next two weeks. Students are expected to read each night on RazKids and to do any Mathletics items that were not completed. You can also redo any of the Mathletics items that you did not get 100% on and try to improve your skills. I will not assign them again, as you can just go in and redo on your own. RazKids will be available to you and your child over the summer months, as we want your child to continue reading so that they do not lose the progress that we have made this year. I am so thankful to all parents who read regularly with your child. It has made such an improvement in their development. I will switch RazKids levels just before summer, so that books are just right, not too easy or difficult.

The upcoming week, June 14^th-18^th, is our last week of wearing uniforms. It is formal uniform on Monday and casual uniform with a crested piece of clothing and black or navy socks for the remainder of the week. The last week of school will be all casual days.

I will be sending home the homework folders, last spelling test and other completed work throughout the week as well, so we do not have as many things to bring home the following week. Please clean these materials out of your child’s backpack each night. On Friday, I will send home black shoes and we will just leave our gym shoes at school for the last week.

Our class has returned all of our library books, so thanks so much for helping Mrs. O’Neill get the library ready for next year.

Please notify the school if you are not returning to our school next year or if you will be not here the last week of classes or at the beginning of the new school year. Special arrangements will need to be made to get you materials, reports or to save your spot.

Pioneer Day Outfits

These are some typical outfits to give you some ideas:

Boys

Shirts were worn loose.  Plain colors were common, but stripes or plaids were also used.  Wear shirts with long or short sleeves and a collar. 

Trousers (pants) were also worn loose.  Heavy cotton, corduroy and canvas pants or overalls are good choices.  Colors included blue, black, gray, browns, especially beige and tan.

Suspenders: Pants were held up by suspenders that were buttoned on the outside of the waistband and crossed in the back. 

Hats:  Everyday hats ranged from pilot caps, straw hats, or wide brimmed low felt hats. 

Girls

Dress or Skirt

Young girls wore simple cotton dresses or skirts to about mid-calf or to just above the ankle. Dresses and blouses had sleeves.

White or coloured cotton apron

Shawl

Hairstyles: A center part is very common.  Chin to shoulder length bobs or long hair worn in three-strand braids were both typical girls’ styles.

Please do not be concerned about creating a totally authentic pioneer costume.  Students may dress up as much as you can manage.  Have fun!!!

Also, students may bring their lunches in pails just like the pioneer children
