It has been a very busy, short week. We celebrated Pink
Shirt Day and the 100th Day of school. As Friday was a half day, we
didn’t get all of the 100th Math activities completed, so we will
continue to work with numbers to 100 in the upcoming week, as well as some new
subtraction strategies. We did make 100 glasses and a necklace with
100 Fruit Loops. Some students are still having some difficulty counting to 100
by ones, fives and tens. Please take some time to practice these essential
counting skills. Counting backwards and forwards to 20 will also aid in quick
and accurate basic addition and subtraction fact skills. We are only required
to count by 2’s to 20 in grade one. This can be one strategy that students use when
solving some word problems, so be sure to practice this as well.
Students were able to view a virtual presentation by the
Alberta Ballet Theatre group entitled, Hansel and Gretel”. Students enjoyed the
twist to this traditional Fables.
This past week, we focused on the Doubles strategy for
subtraction. We know our doubles facts for addition so we can use this to solve
subtraction doubles more quickly. We also did some open-ended subtraction word
problems.
We finished up our learning surrounding Wants and
Needs. I hope the next time that your child asks for something special that
they remember this concept. I know I still have trouble with this concept every
time I see a new pair of shoes! Haha!
On a more serious note, I understand that requirements
for masks will be lifted in the upcoming week. I totally support you in your
decision to still have your child wear or not wear a mask. I will continue to
have masks in my class in case your child would like to wear one and has a
breakage. All they have to do is ask me for one.
I wanted you all to know in advance that I will
probably still continue to wear mine, as my Mother-In-Law is thermally ill and
is in the hospital. As we are her only family in the city. I will be taking this
precaution and wearing my mask, so that I don’t bring anything to the hospital
while I am visiting her.
As a result of long hours at the hospital, I may not
respond to emails as quickly as usual. We have been busy with her each night
for the past month and this will probably continue for a while. I apologize in
advance for not being able to respond as quickly as usual. I will continue to
be in the classroom each day and will try to respond during school time. Please
take time to make precious memories with your family close and near. I know I
am being sentimental at this time, but those are the things that we all hold dear
when illness/tragedy hits.
